  • The CDC reported that in 2014, more than 10 percent of all Americans above the age of 11 had used illicit drugs within the prior month. More than 2 percent had used prescription drugs for reasons other than valid medical purposes.
  • Unemployed individuals may be more likely to abuse drugs in Georgia.
  • From 2009 to 2013, an annual average of 73,000 adolescents, or about 8.9 percent of the state’s population in that age group, reported that they had used illicit drugs during the month before they were surveyed. Although this percentage was slightly lower than the national average starting in 2009, the gap steadily closed until Georgia’s adolescent drug use surpassed the countrywide level during the 2012 to 2013 period.
  • From 2012 to 2013, 35.6 percent of Georgians between the ages of 12 and 17 reported that they didn’t perceive smoking at least one pack of cigarettes daily to be a big risk. About 56.5 percent felt that drinking more than five drinks once or twice each week was similarly nonhazardous.

Ask & Answered!

What are the benefits of performing drug testing?
Employers ensure employee safety and reduce their liability against an unsafe work environment and poor work performance. Other benefits include improved morale, reduced time to fill open positions and lower levels of absenteeism, turn over, and theft. Lastly, some employers receive a worker’s compensation tax credit when implementing a drug free workplace.

What should a company consider when employing drug testing?
A drug free workplace can consist of pre-employment screening, random drug testing, reasonable suspicion drug testing or other tests as determined by regulation or the employer. Employers can request a variety of drug screens methods within a short window.

What does drug testing evaluate?
Drug Tests may evaluate cocaine, amphetamine/methamphetamine, opiates (heroin, codeine, morphine), phencyclidine (PCP), barbiturates, benzodiazepines, and marijuana (THC). Many prescription pain drugs such as xanax, valium, ativan as well as some weight loss drugs are detected as a result of a drug screen as well.

How long does it take to receive drug screening results?
Drug screening results can expect to be shared with the Employer in as little as 24 hours to 7 days depending on whether the test is negative and positive. Some tests may require follow up from the Medical Review Officer (MRO) or additional confirmation at the screening level. With an electronic drug screening process, employer forms and paperwork are available online. The results can also be obtained faster, virtually eliminating the long, nerve-wracking wait for results for the applicant.

How accurate is drug testing?
Drugs can be detected from as early as immediate use to as late as 6 months prior.
